Portsmouth and second division underdogs Cardiff provided the most unlikely FA Cup final pairing in years when they met to decide the winner of the 127th edition of football's oldest competition at Wembley on Saturday 17 May. Kanu's first-half goal won the FA Cup for Portsmouth enabling them to claim the trophy for the first time since 1939.

With the cup final at Wembley fully booked, to help ease any disappointment for eager fans. CT were asked to supply a screen with Dimension supplying the audio on South Sea Common. The all day event started with a local radio station playing through the system, providing a lucky contestant with an opportunity to win tickets to attend the final in Wembley. The main game was shown in it’s entirety with all pre and post-match commentary relayed to the 60,000 fans on the common.

Dimension supplied a Full XLC system, comprising of twelve XLC and four Xsubs all run off of eight EV TG7 amps. The event was project managed by James Loveless with all front of house audio masterfully controlled by Stuart Mayo.

With a successful 1-0 Portsmouth victory, all thoughts moved to the next day; ceremony day. Due to the contingency carefully considered by James Loveless, a clear plan was in place should Portsmouth win. Additional speakers and processing was installed to allow for the live band, this included eight D&B max wedges into six mixes, once again controlled by Stuart Mayo.

The afternoon started with a band interspersed with 2 compares. After two hours of entertainment, the tour bus with the Portsmouth players and the FA cup arrived on the common. The players spent a long time greeting the 170,000 fans that had now cumulated on the common.

James Loveless comments ”With slightly greater numbers arriving than anticipated, the sound system coped brilliantly. All the pre-planning was invaluable and culminated in a highly successful event. The crew on site were excellent and I am really proud to be involved with such an event”.
